Should we produce genetically modified food? As we know genetic modification has been very widely used now in agriculture for a long time. In the market most of the food may contain an ingredient from genetically modified crops. According to a Center for Food Safety report, currently, up to 92% of U.S. corn is genetically engineered (GE), as are 94% of soybeans and 94% of cotton (cottonseed oil is often used in food products). It has been estimated that upwards of 75% of processed foods on supermarket shelves ââ¬â from soda to soup, crackers to condiments ââ¬â contain genetically engineered ingredients. What is genetically modified food? According to Wikipedia, genetically modified foods or GM foods, also genetically engineered foods, are foods produced from organisms that have had changes introduced into their DNA using the methods of genetic engineering. Genetic engineering techniques allow for the introduction of new traits as well as greater control over traits than previous methods such as selective breeding an d mutation breeding. Why we create genetically modified food? The main reason is solving the global hunger. The world health organization estimates that over a billion people suffer from hunger worldwide. The world population has topped 7 billion people and is predicted to double in the next 50 years. The genetically modified foods have high productivity that can help solving the global hunger.
